As energy costs rise the need to look into alternative energy solutions is rising as well. There are many types of alternative energy products out there these days and more coming out all the time. Solar, Wind and Geothermal systems are the most common types of Green energy products you’ll find becoming more readily available as demand for more energy efficient products continues to increase.  The reason these are such excellent choices to pick is that they provide free or virtually free energy aside from the initial cost of the system.

Solar energy is an excellent choice to help offset or even completely replace your need to pay for hydro.  Solar Panels absorb light and convert it into DC or (Direct Current) electricity.  This energy can’t be used directly as the electricity in your house is AC or (Alternating Current) but an inverter is installed to change the DC to AC so you can power your household appliances.  Power can be stored in batteries as DC for backup power in the event of power failures or used directly.  The only downside to solar panels is they produce almost no power on cloudy days and none at night.

Wind energy is another great innovation which uses turbines like propellers atop of poles to catch wind currents and driving the blades round generating electricity.  These Wind Turbines can produce power all day and night as long as there is a decent wind current available.  The setup in your home is the same as a solar system’s except the power source itself.  Wind Turbines can be used in conjunction with Solar panels as well to get the best of each type of power source.  With enough Solar Panels and/or Wind Turbines you can overproduce your power requirements and (if your Hydro company will allow it) get paid by the Hydro company for generating power.  How Cool is that!

Now Geothermal energy is different as it’s used primarily to heat your home.  A Geothermal system uses coolant filled pipes buried underground to extract heat from the earth and heat your home.  It also works in reverse to cool your house in the summer months.  Geothermal energy is not quite free but it is extremely efficient.  It is said that even for high efficiency gas furnaces, every dollar spent only produces 90 cents worth of heat.  With a Geothermal system on the other hand every dollar spent produces 4 dollars worth of heat.  That’s 400% efficient!  These systems can be used for a variety of purposes including radiant floor heating, hot water heating and even as for pool heating.  The main downside to this system as well as the others is the initial cost but that can be recovered by the amount of usage you get free of charge from them.
