Alternative to Furnace fuel bills

Operating an oil or gas forced air furnace as we know can get quite expensive especially in extreme cold spells. This can be even worse in older homes with little or no insulation. Many people have more than one source of heat in their homes these days such as wood stoves to compliment their furnaces in case of power outages or to heat isolated areas in their homes. Having a wood stove can have more direct benefits though. As we all know fuel prices of all sorts are escalating these days and it can get quite expensive to heat a home on oil or natural gas but you can offset your bill a bit by using your wood stove as a more primary source of heat. Many times wood stoves are installed in a certain room in the house which become a hot zone but the rest of the heat dissipates rapidly when radiating to other rooms leaving the home heated inconsistently. A simple way to eliminate this problem is to just turn on your furnace fan and force the heat throughout the house but not using the furnace to heat. This can be taken a step further though by installing a cold air return above or around your wood stove. This allows the furnace to blow more intense heat throughout the home heating more effectively. This second step may be a bit more than most want to and it is a better idea for someone with easier access to wood but is a great idea if you live on a large treed property or farm with trees to spare. Either way complimenting your furnace with a wood stove can save you money on oil or natural gas.
