Drive Thrus Suck!

tim_hortons_2I can’t hardly put into words how stupid these things are.  Drive thrus are the most ridiculous lazy man’s inventions out there.  Sure they may (and I mean maaaaaay) save time but I find at many of these places just take longer to get your food or drink.  Plus while you’re waiting in these lineups in your RUNNING CAR you’re just putting more emissions into the air.

Coffee shop drive thrus are the biggest issue when it comes to getting poor service as well as dumb people that have to order half the menu.  I mean, come on what are you in a drive thru for you ass!  How many people have to have coffee in the morning and have to go through a drive thru.  So many lazy people in a rush think it’s better to sit in their car for ten minutes pumping exhaust from their car into the air when they could just park, go into the place and get their coffee faster.  This sort of ignorance is just mind blowing.

Certain cities like Toronto, Ontario  Canada have anti idling bylaws which make it a ticketable offence to have a parked vehicle idling even if you’re in it.  I think that’s a reasonable idea.  But I think we should put some more strict laws on drive thru idling.  A lot of Carbon Dioxide gets released into the atmosphere from idling cars.

Now I may be ranting but I have been in enough drive thrus in my time especially coffee shop ones to know that lazy people make the world go round.  Look how much take out we consume in a year.  Not even pizza or burgers just coffee for example or tea.  Say for example that you drink one coffee a day.  That’s 365 coffees a year.  Now suppose you go to the drive thru for each one of those orders and then think of how many of those times you will be in a decent sized lineup.  Now how much time is your car sitting and spewing gases out the tailpipe?  A crapload!

What I’m trying to say basically is that cars put out way to many emissions to have them sitting in some drive thru for 5 minutes or so while you wait to get one stinking coffee or happy meal.  Give me a break people.  Make your coffee at home and use a thermos.  Stop using and throwing away disposable cups.  Stop wasting money and stop idling in drive thrus for orders you easily have the time to go into the restaurant and get.

  • While I can see what you are saying regarding the emissions that cars put out while in the drive through, there is really no other way around it. At least not in the mornings.

If you take a normal Tim Hortons between the hours of 6am and 9am there is a constant rush of cars. Something like one every 10-20 seconds. If everyone of them parked their car, got out and went into the store it would be jammed in the first 30 minutes and people would not be able to get in or out.

No to mention that coffee from home is never as good as coffee from the shop. You can bring in your own cup though, but as you said, people are lazy. If you bring in your own cup, then you have to wash it.

  • I disagree that there is no other way around avoiding drive throughs. Even if you only REDUCE your drive-thru usage, it is still an improvement in several ways. Reducing emissions, reducing the line at the drive-thru for those who are REALLY in a hurry (the original point of a drive-thru, yes?) and probably better for the business, as they will increase revenue when those less-rushed customers come inside and see all the other things they could be buying! And I can tell you that when I was commuting 45 minutes from Manchester to Hopkinton, NH and would stop at Dunkins in Hooksett, I VERY often went inside because it truly WAS quicker. Amen, Praise The Lord, I rest my case. ;-)

I’d like to find out what makes Dunkin Donuts coffee taste so much better! Could a hundred-plus dollar home coffee maker make the difference? Or is it all about technique? I’ll tell ya, spending $1.93 american for a medium hot certainly talks me out of buying coffee many days! Everyone needs to just SLOW DOWN a minute and think about what’s important.

  • I understand where you coming from and I believe that you have a good point. However, there are just certain circumstances in which we cannot avoid like drive thrus. It was the idea of fast food restaurant to provide the fast service of coffee, soda, burgers etc. and somehow they satisfied customers. But then I was also thinking of the carbon dioxide which they’re car’s release during idling. Hmmm..that was truly bad for our environment.

  • thanks !! very helpful post!
