It is quite common to see Front Load washing machines in peoples houses around the world. With the ever growing need to reduce emissions and conserve energy we are slowly moving towards using higher efficiency items in the household on a regular basis. Front Load washing machines are one of the best and easiest ways for us to save energy, water and money in our everyday lives. These washers beat conventional Top Loading washing machines hands down when it comes down to energy savings. Here are some of the top reasons why:
1. Conventional Top Load washing machines can use use about 40 gallons of water per wash cycle where you can save about 18 gallons per wash with a comparable Energy Star rated Front Loader. Front Loaders will save you about 40- 50% on water and about 50% on energy. This leads to big savings when you see your water and hydro bills.
2. Front Loaders spin cycle speeds are much higher than Top Loaders. This allows them to remove more water from the clothes before they are placed in a dryer or on a clothes line thus drying them faster.
3. Less Detergent is required to clean clothes. Front Loading washing machines use HE (High Efficiency) laundry detergent because regular detergents produce excessive suds which is not necessary in a Front Loading machine. Less detergent means less waste.
4. Front Loaders don’t have agitators. This equals more space in the drum for clothes which means less loads are needed. This makes large drum sizes unnecessary thus eliminating the need for so much water per cycle.
5. Front Loading washing machines are more gentle on your clothes. Top Loading machines use an agitator which pulls and stretches clothes reducing their lifespan. By tumble washing clothes Front Loading washing machines eliminate stretching, pulling and even tearing clothes.

As energy costs rise the need to look into alternative energy solutions is rising as well. There are many types of alternative energy products out there these days and more coming out all the time. Solar, Wind and Geothermal systems are the most common types of Green energy products you’ll find becoming more readily available as demand for more energy efficient products continues to increase. The reason these are such excellent choices to pick is that they provide free or virtually free energy aside from the initial cost of the system.
Silly isn’t it? Well not quite as silly as people who have the means to dry clothes on a clothes line on a nice day but rather use their dryer instead.
I’ve been using cold water to wash clothes in for a few months and I think it’s a great idea to help save on hot water. There are a few products out there that help you save energy by reducing the amount of hot water you use in your laundry.
If you have a forced air furnace as most of us do then you will have vents for circulating heat and air conditioning. These vents may also be on your floor, walls and even ceiling depending on how your houses heating ducts were installed.
Toilets can be one of the most wasteful sources of water we have in our households and it costs money whether you’re on town water paying a water bill or on a well system paying electricity to power a water pump.
Chemical fertilizers are a very common product used to promote plant growth and keep plants healthy but they are still just that.. CHEMICAL.
Hot water in our homes is essential but not necessarily heated in the most efficient way.
I’ve wondered for years why aren’t there places to recycle batteries around town because we all know that batteries contain very toxic chemicals. Throwing them out will just contaminate our soil, drinking water and eventually us. Thankfully there are now programs that are being implemented around the country that are helping people make smarter decisions by recycling their used batteries instead of tossing them in the trash.
Thees days it is essential for us to consider what we are throwing out due to the overwhelming amount of garbage being sent to our landfills. We only have so much space to dispose of garbage unless we want to live in it. As most of us know there are tools at our disposal to help reduce the amount of waste we send to the curb. Composters for example are excellent tools which most people can use to eliminate the need for throwing out organic waste such as fruit and vegetable matter, egg shells, grass and leaves, tea bags, coffee grounds, animal hair, and vacuum dust. These things make up a large part of what we throw out. Another thing many cities are doing to help get the problem is instituting these use of Green Bins which like recycling bins are collected by the city but are for organic waste, paper and cardboard, meat and bones. The resulting compost can be used in city projects for planting trees and gardens or in some cities we can buy it for our own gardens. These are a good way to dispose of compostable types of waste if you live in an area where a composter would be an issue such as a condo. However if you can compost you will gain the benefits of producing fresh compost for planting and even producing compost teas which are an excellent fertilizer for plants. I’ve done it for years and it produces excellent soil rich in nutrients and gives me peace of mind knowing the materials used to make it is not going to a landfill. I believe that the green bins are a great idea too although I don’t use it as much as the composter. The great part about Green Bins is you can dispose of meats, bones and dairy products which are not very suitable to composters so I pretty much use it for this purpose alone or when I don’t have enough space in my composter. So the main question here is “Green Bin or Composter”. Both do the same job but home composting has more benefits for the user but if your city does not have a green program such as the Green Bins, ask them why not?
