Top 5 reasons to buy an Energy Star Front Load Washing Machine

front-load-washerIt is quite common to see Front Load washing machines in peoples houses around the world.  With the ever growing need to reduce emissions and conserve energy we are slowly moving towards using higher efficiency items in the household on a regular basis.  Front Load washing machines are one of the best and easiest ways for us to save energy, water and money in our everyday lives.  These washers beat conventional Top Loading washing machines hands down when it comes down to energy savings.  Here are some of the top reasons why:

1.  Conventional Top Load washing machines can use use about 40 gallons of water per wash cycle where you can save about 18 gallons per wash with a comparable Energy Star rated Front Loader.  Front Loaders will save you about 40- 50% on water and about 50% on energy.  This leads to big savings when you see your water and hydro bills.

2.  Front Loaders spin cycle speeds are much higher than Top Loaders.  This allows them to remove more water from the clothes before they are placed in a dryer or on a clothes line thus drying them faster.

3.  Less Detergent is required to clean clothes.  Front Loading washing machines use HE (High Efficiency) laundry detergent because regular detergents produce excessive suds which is not necessary in a Front Loading machine.  Less detergent means less waste.

4.  Front Loaders don’t have agitators.  This equals more space in the drum for clothes which means less loads are needed.  This makes large drum sizes unnecessary thus eliminating the need for so much water per cycle.

5.  Front Loading washing machines are more gentle on your clothes.  Top Loading machines use an agitator which pulls and stretches clothes reducing their lifespan.   By tumble washing clothes Front Loading washing machines eliminate stretching, pulling and even tearing clothes.

3 great types of alternative energy

solar-homeAs energy costs rise the need to look into alternative energy solutions is rising as well. There are many types of alternative energy products out there these days and more coming out all the time. Solar, Wind and Geothermal systems are the most common types of Green energy products you’ll find becoming more readily available as demand for more energy efficient products continues to increase.  The reason these are such excellent choices to pick is that they provide free or virtually free energy aside from the initial cost of the system.

Solar energy is an excellent choice to help offset or even completely replace your need to pay for hydro.  Solar Panels absorb light and convert it into DC or (Direct Current) electricity.  This energy can’t be used directly as the electricity in your house is AC or (Alternating Current) but an inverter is installed to change the DC to AC so you can power your household appliances.  Power can be stored in batteries as DC for backup power in the event of power failures or used directly.  The only downside to solar panels is they produce almost no power on cloudy days and none at night.

Wind energy is another great innovation which uses turbines like propellers atop of poles to catch wind currents and driving the blades round generating electricity.  These Wind Turbines can produce power all day and night as long as there is a decent wind current available.  The setup in your home is the same as a solar system’s except the power source itself.  Wind Turbines can be used in conjunction with Solar panels as well to get the best of each type of power source.  With enough Solar Panels and/or Wind Turbines you can overproduce your power requirements and (if your Hydro company will allow it) get paid by the Hydro company for generating power.  How Cool is that!

Now Geothermal energy is different as it’s used primarily to heat your home.  A Geothermal system uses coolant filled pipes buried underground to extract heat from the earth and heat your home.  It also works in reverse to cool your house in the summer months.  Geothermal energy is not quite free but it is extremely efficient.  It is said that even for high efficiency gas furnaces, every dollar spent only produces 90 cents worth of heat.  With a Geothermal system on the other hand every dollar spent produces 4 dollars worth of heat.  That’s 400% efficient!  These systems can be used for a variety of purposes including radiant floor heating, hot water heating and even as for pool heating.  The main downside to this system as well as the others is the initial cost but that can be recovered by the amount of usage you get free of charge from them.

If you are planning on reinstalling a new furnace or upgrading the electrical system in your home consider Solar, Wind and Geothermal systems.  These systems are great for saving money on power and they are an excellent investment that are environmentally friendly and will add value to the resale of your home as well.

Hung Out To Dry

Clothes Line KidSilly isn’t it? Well not quite as silly as people who have the means to dry clothes on a clothes line on a nice day but rather use their dryer instead.

So many people these days decide to dry their clothes indoors in a dryer and pay money then simply go outside, hang them on the line and let mother nature do the work. I understand it’s a little more work than just tossing them into a machine and hitting the start button but come on! If it’s a nice day out and you have a yard to throw up a clothes line, why not?

Clothes dryers are a convenient way to dry clothes but use a large amount of power. Considering that you can dry for free on a clothes line would you still rather use a dryer? Another plus to line drying is that you’re saving wear and tear on your dryer prolonging it’s lifespan further increasing your savings. Getting outside on a nice sunny day to load or unload the line isn’t so bad either. It’s a good reason to get outdoors and enjoy the day.

Now you may be saying “what about us who live in condos or apartments who don’t have access to laundry lines”. Well you are not out of luck. You can also buy indoor laundry stands to dry with or if you have a deck or balcony you can take them outside temporarily and then back in after the clothes are dry. You can save a fair amount on your hydro bill each month and possibly put it towards air conditioning if necessary. Hope you like the picture!

Wash In Cold Water

Tide Cold WaterI’ve been using cold water to wash clothes in for a few months and I think it’s a great idea to help save on hot water.  There are a few products out there that help you save energy by reducing the amount of hot water you use in your laundry.

I’ve switched to using this “Tide Coldwater” and it works pretty good.  I always thought that using cold water in the laundry would be great but wouldn’t wash quite as well since warmer water is usually better for removing stains.  But this works just as good as the normal stuff.

This is just one example of a cold water washing product though.  By using cold water you can still get a good wash and save money on hot water.  Plus by saving the hot water you will not run out during a shower as easily if you have a large family or undersized hot water tank.

Your hot water tank will not have to heat as much cold water as often.  This can help you help your hot water heater and your energy bill.  A nice little trick to save power and money.

Cover Your Vents!

Floor VentIf you have a forced air furnace as most of us do then you will have vents for circulating heat and air conditioning. These vents may also be on your floor, walls and even ceiling depending on how your houses heating ducts were installed.

As we all know the heating system in our home is meant to evenly distribute heat throughout the house. It takes a lot of energy and fuel to heat a full house from a low temperature. It also puts more strain on your furnace to heat consistently for a extended amount of time.

If you don’t use all the rooms in your house you are likely wasting a lot of money on heat and or air conditioning. Simply covering up the vents in rooms you don’t use and shutting the doors can help save you money and energy. Your furnace will then not need to run as long since it doesn’t need to heat up as much space.

So by saving your furnace from heating up unused space you save energy, fuel and money. Plus your house will heat up faster. You may also actually be able to increase the temperature in your house above normal and still run cheaper than usual with this method depending on how much of your house is left cold. This is a great way to save money on heating and it also works well with air conditioning too.

Save water with your toilet

Toilet Tank DisplacementToilets can be one of the most wasteful sources of water we have in our households and it costs money whether you’re on town water paying a water bill or on a well system paying electricity to power a water pump.

The toilets being sold today are mostly built to be energy conserving by using as little water as possible. However older toilets in our homes are not as efficient. They use lots of water, flush longer and may be in need of repair.

You can conserve a little water and energy with every flush if you have an older toilet. Now in a standard toilet tank as shown above there is a fair amount of empty space for water but the toilet doesn’t always need that much water per flush. Before you use your toilet again try to put a bottle of water or two in the toilet tank. This will reduce the amount of water in the tank by displacing it with the bottle. You can also use a brick or anything heavy that will not run down the drain with the water. Another good part to add is that your toilet will fill and flush faster.

So by by doing this you can save water and money on your water or electricity bill. Not a bad choice when it comes to your bills and helping conserve water.

Compost Teas

Worm Compost Tea Bags Chemical fertilizers are a very common product used to promote plant growth and keep plants healthy but they are still just that.. CHEMICAL.

These days more and more people are becoming aware of organic fertilizers and their advantages over chemical fertilizers. Organic farming is also more popular with more people noticing the taste of organic foods to be better. Chemical fertilizers tend to leave an actual noticeable chemical taste in some foods compared to organically grown ones.

Farmers have used things such as manure for many years to increase the yield of their crops and keep them healthy by returning it to the soil raising the nutrient levels.

Now more modern products such as compost teas, although based on old technology are becoming popular with gardeners since they are organic and very rich in nutrients and beneficial bacteria. This bacteria helps break down decaying matter and also makes plants stronger and better able to resist disease. Compost Teas are made by soaking compost in clean water for a couple of days releasing the nutrients, bacteria and microbes which are found naturally in decaying matter and straining the “Tea” and separating the compost. The resulting liquid is Compost Tea which can then be used as a fertilizer.

If you’re looking for an alternative to chemical fertilizers Compost Teas are an excellent natural source of nutrients and beneficial bacteria that will keep your garden happy, healthy and tasty if you like to grow your own food.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless Water HeaterHot water in our homes is essential but not necessarily heated in the most efficient way.

Standard Hot Water Tanks are either heated by electricity or now more commonly by gas .  Electric water heaters use quite a bit of power and are useless during power outages unless you have a generator.  Gas water heaters on the other hand are OK during a power outage and heat up water a little faster.  The problem with both systems is that they both constantly heat and reheat the same water over and over again to maintain its temperature.  This burns up more energy for nothing.

A more efficient way to heat water is a Tankless water heater which provides hot water on demand.  No storage tanks or reheating water over and over.

Tankless water heaters are excellent because they operate only when you turn the tap on or when water flows through them.  They are gas operated which allows them to heat water faster and instantly.  Another bonus to them is that they are compact in size eliminating the need to use up valuable floor space plus Tankless water heaters mount on the wall keeping them where they’re easily accessible.

The only problem with them is they may limit the flow of hot water throughout the house when multiple taps are on since they can only produce so much water at any given time.  Although you can upgrade to a larger unit if that is the case.

Tankless water heaters are an excellent solution to help eliminate high electric or gas bills depending on what type of hat water tank you have.  These systems themselves are more expensive than conventional tank heaters but you’ll save that money on gas in the long run by not reheating your water all the time especially if you are away from home frequently.

Recycle Your Batteries

Recycled BatteriesI’ve wondered for years why aren’t there places to recycle batteries around town because we all know that batteries contain very toxic chemicals.  Throwing them out will just contaminate our soil, drinking water and eventually us.  Thankfully there are now programs that are being implemented around the country that are helping people make smarter decisions by recycling their used batteries instead of tossing them in the trash.

Home Depot for example has taken a step forward in the race to clean up our our environment by implementing the use of battery recycling bins in their stores.  You can just walk in when you’re going to pick up  some lumber or that new power drill you’ve had your eyes on and drop off your batteries free of charge.  Can’t get much easier than that.

Home Depot also offers Paint and Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulbs recycling too which is great considering we all have old paint cans to get rid of and you can’t get rid of them in the garbage.  CFL’s which have mercury in them are becoming more popular by the day so it is imperative that we recycle them.

Rona is another company that is offering a CFL recycling program and there will be many others to join these new recycling programs in the near future.  You can always go to your local town office or city hall and see what battery, Paint or CFL recycling programs are as well.

To Compost or not to Compost

ComposterThees days it is essential for us to consider what we are throwing out due to the overwhelming amount of garbage being sent to our landfills.  We only have so much space to dispose of garbage unless we want to live in it.  As most of us know there are tools at our disposal to help reduce the amount of waste we send to the curb.  Composters for example are excellent tools which most people can use to eliminate the need for throwing out organic waste such as fruit and vegetable matter, egg shells, grass and leaves, tea bags, coffee grounds, animal hair, and vacuum dust.  These things make up a large part of what we throw out.  Another thing many cities are doing to help get the problem is instituting these use of Green Bins which like recycling bins are collected by the city but are for organic waste, paper and cardboard, meat and bones.  The resulting compost can be used in city projects for planting trees and gardens or in some cities we can buy it for our own gardens.  These are a good way to dispose of compostable types of waste if you live in an area where a composter would be an issue such as a condo.  However if you can compost you will gain the benefits of producing fresh compost for planting and even producing compost teas which are an excellent fertilizer for plants.  I’ve done it for years and it produces excellent soil rich in nutrients and gives me peace of mind knowing the materials used to make it is not going to a landfill.  I believe that the green bins are a great idea too although I don’t use it as much as the composter.  The great part about Green Bins is you can dispose of meats, bones and dairy products which are not very suitable to composters so I pretty much use it for this purpose alone or when I don’t have enough space in my composter.  So the main question here is “Green Bin or Composter”.  Both do the same job but home composting has more benefits for the user but if your city does not have a green program such as the Green Bins, ask them why not?
